Hornet Men’s Lacrosse Draws Washington College (MD) in NCAA Second Round

Bracket

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s lacrosse team will advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in the last four seasons and host a second-round match-up on Shellenberger Field. The Hornets received an at-large bid and will face Washington College (MD) this weekend on a day and time to be determined.

Lynchburg (13-3) finished second in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament, dropping a 21-15 decision Sunday afternoon. Senior A.J. Tinklepaugh (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) and Ryan Cranston (West Chester, PA/Henderson) lead a balanced offensive attack, each with 45 points. Sophomore attack Johnny Black (Timonium, MD/St. Paul’s) paces the team with 37 goals, while junior Brian McCulloch (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) has a team-best 18 assists. Sophomore Garrett Curran (Hull, MA/Tabor Academy) has a .526 save percentage in net with an 8.83 goals-against average, and is flanked by pre-season honorable mention All-American defender Chad Clark (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson).

The Washington College Shoremen (13-4) also received an at-large bid after falling in the Centennial Conference Championship game to Gettysburg, 8-4. Chris Read leads the offense with 38 goals and 50 points, while Sam Lane has posted 32 goals and five assists. Washington allows just 5.75 goals per game, and goalie Kevin Thibadeau has a .682 save percentage. The program has a rich history, winning the national title in 1998, and has appeared in the Division III Tournament 22 times.

The winner of the Lynchburg/Washington game will advance into the Elite Eight to play any one of three teams. Denison College plays Ohio Wesleyan University Wednesday with the winner traveling to top-ranked Salisbury University this weekend. The winners of the contests in Lynchburg and Salisbury would then meet with a trip to the Final Four at stake.
