LC Men Repeat as ODAC Outdoor Track Champions – Women Finish Fourth

BRIDGEWATER, VA – The Lynchburg College men’s outdoor track & field team won its ninth-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title Saturday and the Hornet women placed fourth at the 2006 ODAC Championships, hosted by Bridgewater College.

Junior Ryan Holmes (Glenn Allen, VA/J.R. Tucker) earned the co-men’s athlete of the meet honors after winning the 110-meter hurdles (15.88) and the triple jump (46.50) and taking second in both the high jump (6-2) and the long jump (22-10.75). Hornet head coach Dr. Jack Toms was named the men’s coach of the year, leading LC to the team title 16 times in the last 17 years. Lynchburg scored 257 team points, trailed by Bridgewater College with 106 and Eastern Mennonite with 94.

Senior Brian Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) won titles in the 1,500 (4:05.08) and the 5,000 (15:28.93) and senior Rory Lee-Washington (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) won the conference title in the discus (137-3) and took second in the shot put and third in the hammer throw. Sophomore McKinley Johnson (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst Co.) won the 400-meter hurdles in 56.56, Scott Decker (Clifton, VA/Robinson) cleared 15-5.75 to win the pole vault and Chris Florio (Midland, VA/Colonial Forge) had a heave of 169-7 to capture the javelin title. Xavier Sayles (Richmond, VA/Manchester) finished second in the 100 and the 200-meter dashes.

Junior Amanda Diver (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) won the women’s 800-meter run in 2:22.18 and sophomore Mary Mohay (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) won the pole vault, clearing 10-11.75. Sarah Funderburke (Fredericksburg, VA/Courtland) took third in the 400 and sixth in the 200-meter dash while Kristi Link (Alexandria, VA) placed second in the javelin. Danielle Garafalo (Boxford, MA/Masconomet) placed in the top six in the high jump (third), the 100-meter hurdles (fourth), the long jump (fifth) and the triple jump (fifth).
