Residence Hall Policies

The Particulars of Residence Living

1. Residence Life Staff
Each floor/wing has a trained student resident assistant (R.A.). Each building also has a hall director (senior or graduate student) who oversees the day-to-day functions and activities of the entire building. Residence assistants supervise and manage activities and students on their floor. They are also sources of information and referral.
2. Safety and Security
Residence halls are locked 24 hours per day and have mandatory card access. Accessibility by intercom is available for authorized visitors. Visitors can call the room or the campus information center to get in touch with students. Crews and Reynolds Courts units are accessible by key only. Security personnel are on duty around-the-clock and emergency phones, indicated by blue lights, are located throughout campus. The College complies with all fire safety regulations and the federal Safety and Security Act.
3. Single Rooms
Singles are only offered to students with special medical needs.
4. Room Furnishings
All rooms are air-conditioned and carpeted except Hundley Hall. Rooms in all residence halls are equipped with the following for each student: standard twin bed, dresser, desk, chair, and closet with overhead storage. All windows are fitted with mini-blinds.
5. Beds/Lofts
Each student is provided with an extra long twin bed. Freestanding lofts are permitted providing they meet specifications (available from the Residence Life Office).
6. Kitchen Facilities
Facilities in each building include a refrigerator/freezer, sink, stove/oven, and microwave oven. Dish washing soap and kitchen linens are not provided. Vending machines for drinks and snacks are also located in all residence halls. Microwave ovens are not provided in Crews or Reynolds Courts (apartment-style living for juniors and seniors).
7. Bathrooms
The first, second, and third floors of Hundley Hall have two-room suites joined by bathrooms; fourth floor Hundley and all other residence halls have community bathrooms.
8. Laundry Facilities
Each residence hall has laundry rooms equipped with washers and dryers and sinks. Crews and Reynolds Courts, the Townhouses, and Peaksview Apartments have shared laundry rooms. Students provide their own ironing boards and irons.
9. Computers
Students are encouraged to purchase or bring their own computers from home. The College recommends a standard computer configuration. Call Information Technology and Resources at 434/544-8350 for additional information. There are also several computer labs available for student use.
11. Television
Cable television is included in housing fees.

General Policies of Residence Hall Living

Students should refer to the Hornet Student Handbook for a complete set of rules

1. Alcohol/Drugs
Possession, consumption, or distribution of alcohol by anyone under 21 and use or possession of controlled substances are strictly prohibited.
2. Visitation
Each residence hall has visitation hours that vary according to building. Students must be with their guests at all times.
3. Quiet Hours
Quiet hours (11 p.m. to 11 a.m.) apply to all residence halls. Accepted noise during quiet hours is defined as some incidental noise or noise within reason. Quiet hours are in effect 24 hours per day during exams. Courtesy hours are in effect 24 hours per day.
4. Smoking
All residence halls and Peaksview Apartments are designated as smoke-free buildings; therefore, smoking may not occur within any part of these facilities or within 50 feet of the buildings, including exterior steps and entrance ways.
Possession of or use of a hookah is prohibited in all residential facilities.
5. Pets
Sorry, we like them, too, but for health reasons, no pets other than fish may be kept in students' rooms.
6. Room Changes
All room changes must be requested through the Office of Residence Life, and no room changes are permitted prior to the beginning of the third week of classes.

Room Assignments

Single, full-time freshmen, sophomore, and junior students, other than those living at home with parents and Access students (students age 25 and older), are required to live in College residence halls.

All new students must complete and return the Housing and Preference Questionnaire and Application for Residence Hall Space, both of which were mailed to them by the Office of Enrollment Services. Students who will reside on campus will receive their housing assignments for the academic year by August 1. Also at this time, students will be notified of the dates they can move into the residence halls. Early arrivals are not permitted without permission from the Residence Life Office.

Currently enrolled students begin the room sign-up process in mid-April for the following academic year.

Room Changes

All room changes must be requested through the Residence Life Office. A three-week freeze on room changes during which no changes may be made is effective at the beginning of each semester. Similarly, after the housing sign-up process for the next academic year is completed during the spring semester, no room changes are permitted.

During room change periods, if a student requests to move into a room that is currently vacant, he/she will be assessed an additional single room charge.

Residence Hall Closings

All residence halls are officially closed for Thanksgiving and Winter Break vacations. Students living on campus must vacate their residence hall during these breaks and may not return until the residence halls re-open at the end of the break period. Specific dates and times of closings and opening are listed in The Hornet (student handbook) and are posted in the residence halls. Students must apply to stay over Fall Break and Spring Break. Information regarding these breaks will be emailed directly to students.

During exam periods, all students must vacate their residence halls within 24 hours after their last exam, with the exception of the end of the spring semester for seniors graduating in May.
