Lynchburg College’s athletic fields are headed for an extreme makeover

A $4.25 million renovation of Shellenberger and Moon fields will begin this spring at Lynchburg College.

Shellenberger Field improvements will:

· Increase the track from six lanes to eight, which will allow Lynchburg College to host NCAA track meets at the collegiate level, as well as regional and state track meets at the high school level.

· Be able to sustain year-round play for four varsity sports, thanks to a synthetic turf. Lines for soccer, field hockey, and men’s and women’s lacrosse will be permanently stitched into the field.

· Increase recreational opportunities for Lynchburg College students, thanks to new field lighting.

· Add a 500-seat grandstand, which includes 100 stadium seats, an open-air press box and a plaza.

Demolition of the current field, named for longtime Lynchburg College soccer coach Bill Shellenberger, will begin soon after commencement exercises on May 13. Coach Shellenberger was once touted as "the winningest soccer coach in America," with 31 consecutive winning seasons.

The field, which should be ready by fall, was last renovated in the 1990s. About a foot of dirt will be removed from Shellenberger and will be relocated to other athletic fields, including Moon Field, named for the late Aubrey Moon, a 1956 graduate of the college who coached numerous sports during his 36-year tenure with the Hornets. Several field events, including javelin, shot put, hammer and discus, will be relocated to Moon Field, which will also get a new outfield fence and scoreboard for softball.

The Board of Trustees gave its nod of approval at its Feb. 25 meeting, when it was also announced that the Student Government Association had donated $50,000 to the Shellenberger renovation. This unprecedented gift reflects the wide student support and enthusiasm for more recreational opportunities at the college.

More than 70 percent of LC students participate in varsity, intramural and club sport activities, including LC’s national champion men’s club lacrosse team.

"These basically new athletic fields will enable impromptu student football games, Frisbee tossing and numerous other athletic activities on a 24/7 basis," said LC President Kenneth Garren. "Lynchburg College believes, as did the ancient Greeks, that an education requires a sound mind in a sound body. Our recent construction of Centennial Hall gave a significant boost to the ‘strong mind’ component; the major renovations of Shellenberger and Moon Fields will be the corresponding match necessary for the ‘sound body.’"

There is still time to be part of this important initiative. Go to http://www.lynchburg.edu/readyfitgo.xml to learn how you can support the project.

In a separate $100,000 renovation project, Fox Field will get a new press box and restrooms. The baseball field was named for the late James C. Fox who spent 38 years teaching health and physical education at L.C. and coaching varsity sports, including basketball, baseball, cross country and swimming.
