PASS Leaders

Leadership/Employment Opportunities:
Consider Being a PASS Leader

PASS Leaders are tutors who facilitate group study sessions for a specific instructor and course. PASS sessions are intended to supplement the material learned in class – focusing on both content and study skills. Hopefully, you’ve taken advantage of the PASS sessions offered in some of your classes. Students who plan to attend graduate school find the PASS job an appealing one because it allows them to sit through core courses for a second (or even third or fourth) time and strengthen their base knowledge of the subject, as well as strengthen their relationships with faculty. The position also sets up PASS leaders as brilliant candidates for graduate teaching assistantships.

If you want to apply for a PASS leader opening, you’ll need to meet the job qualifications first.
• a firm understanding of the subject/course you are going to be tutoring
• an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher
• an earned letter grade of a B or better in the class that you will be tutoring; however, you are not required to be a major in this area of study
• be able to attend all lectures of the specified course
• keep up with all notes and assigned readings
• conduct two regularly scheduled study sessions per week (in the late afternoons, evenings or weekends most likely)
• display a professional attitude concerning class standards, grades, as well as student issues and concerns
• model appropriate professional behavior and attitudes towards the professor, students, and other staff
• possess strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, as well as efficiency with email and EXCEL

PASS leaders are required to meet with other PASS leaders and supervisory staff at scheduled meetings. All new tutors are also required to attend a common training program the day before classes start. Ongoing training and support will be provided throughout the semester in a weekly seminar for the first seven weeks of the fall semester. The current student employment wage is $5.65 per hour and PASS leaders work approximately eight hours per week.
