For Programs

In 1999, Lynchburg College received a grant from the Jessie Ball duPont Fund in the amount of $153,910 to support a three-year, comprehensive environmental education initiative. A Virginia Environmental Endowment (VEE) grant contributed an additional $11,230 to this program. In addition, Lynchburg College received $75,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency to continue and expand these programs.  These grants have helped us launch comprehensive environmental education and research programs at the Claytor Nature Study Center designed to serve our College, K-12 students and teachers, and the local community.

Recently, Frank B. Gibb III, a 1968 Lynchburg College graduate and Richmond resident, established a $50,000 endowment fund to support environmental education programs at the Claytor Nature Study Center.

For Development

Construction of the A. Boyd Claytor III Education & Research Center was made possible by a series of generous grants from a variety of foundations, corporations, trustees, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Lynchburg College.

At the forefront, the George I. Alden Trust awarded the College a $80,000 challenge grant that helped lay the foundation for a successful campaign that raised over $625,000 for the new building.  Additional grants received for the project came from numerous foundations and corporations.

Your Support Needed

Through your generosity you will be recognized as an active and important partner in the pursuit of our mission to conserve our environmental resources and to educate young people about the natural world and their interactions within our shared environment.

Our environmental education programs for college, K-12, and community participants are ongoing but continue to require external support. Improvements to the Center's facilities, trail systems, and natural areas also require financial assistance.  Furture major projects include an observatory, lodge for students, and a residence for visiting scholars.

Please consider a contribution to Lynchburg College and to the Claytor Nature Study Center. For more information, please contact our Development Office at 434-544-8665.
