Dr. Jack M. Toms
Head Coach

Dr. Jack M. Toms, one of the most decorated athletics coaches in the state of Virginia, is in his 30th year with the Hornets. He has become the most successful coach in the history of LC athletics, with 61 conference and 25 NCAA Regional Coach of the Year awards, and has transformed the LC runners into a nationally-competitive program. He was recognized in 1995 as the Commonwealth of Virginia’s top track and field coach with the Walt Cormack Award for success at the college level. Dr. Toms was inducted into the Lynchburg College Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

Having coached the track and field teams for 30 years, Toms has yet to see a year in which he did not qualify an individual or team for the NCAA national meet. He has produced 79 All-Americans and 11 National Champions. His men’s track & field teams swept the conference indoor and outdoor competitions in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 - with squads winning by large margins. Track teams under Toms tutelage have won 35 of the last 37 league titles. He has produced the 2001 NCAA Male Athlete of the Year in James Goss, and the NCAA MVP, Kevin Smith, in 2001. He has coached eight NCAA South/Southeast Regional Athletes of the Year and has served in many capacities in the United States Track and Field Coaches Association.

Also the Athletic Director for Lynchburg College, he directed LC to the ODAC Commissioner’s Cup twice, given to the best overall athletic program in the conference. Under his leadership, the LC athletic department has achieved unparalleled success, as it is one of the top athletic programs on the ODAC. He has served as vice president and as President of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, and holds level I, II and III certification in leadership from the National Association of College Directors of Athletics.

A 1969 graduate of Lynchburg College and a Hall of Famer, he was team's MVP twice in his collegiate days and was the captain for three years. He has acheived the rank of full professor in the school of health science and human performance. Toms earned his masters degree from the University of Virginia and his doctorate from West Virginia University. He and his wife, Theresa, have two sons, Nathan and David.

Steve Smith
Assistant Coach

Steve Smith begins his first year with the Track and Field program after spending seven years as an assistant baseball coach. He will assume the duties as the strength coach - working with sprinters and jumpers. Smith played baseball for two years at Lynchburg and had a .348 career batting average with 43 runs, 33 RBI, and a .976 fielding percentage as a first baseman. He hit .409 his senior year, and was named All-ODAC, All-Region, and All-Tournament at the ODAC Championship.

Along with his coaching duties, Smith is a faculty member in the School of Health Science and Human Performance teaching courses in Health and Physical Education and Exercise Physiology. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and he holds two credentials from USA Weightlifting (Certified Sports Performance Coach and Club Coach). Smith also played baseball and football at Division I Arizona State University before transferring to Lynchburg. He graduated from Lynchburg in 1997 (B.S.) and in 1999 (M.Ed.) He is currently pursuing his doctorate from the University of Virginia in Motor Learning and is married to Jamie. The couple has two children (Easton 3 1/2 and Sierra 1).


Jesse BaumannJesse Baumann
Assistant Coach

Jesse Baumann joins the 2005-06 Lynchburg College track and field coaching staff this spring. He comes to LC from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), where he was a four-year letter winner for the Pointers. Baumann was a six-time NCAA Division III national meet qualifier and a four-time All-American in the 800 meters, the 1500 meters and Distance Medley Relay. He also earned all-conference honors in both cross country and track, along with being voted both cross country and track team captain, and track team MVP. He graduated from UWSP in the spring 2004, with a degree in watershed management. Baumann will assist mainly with the LC distance runners.
