Steve SmithSteve Smith begins his third year with the Track and Field program after spending seven years as an assistant baseball coach. He will assume the duties as the strength coach - working with sprinters and jumpers. Smith played baseball for two years at Lynchburg and had a .348 career batting average with 43 runs, 33 RBI, and a .976 fielding percentage as a first baseman. He hit .409 his senior year, and was named All-ODAC, All-Region, and All-Tournament at the ODAC Championship.
Along with his coaching duties, Smith is a faculty member in the School of Health Science and Human Performance teaching courses in Health and Physical Education and Exercise Physiology. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) and he holds two credentials from USA Weightlifting (Certified Sports Performance Coach and Club Coach). Smith also played baseball and football at Division I Arizona State University before transferring to Lynchburg. He graduated from Lynchburg in 1997 (B.S.) and in 1999 (M.Ed.) He is currently pursuing his doctorate from the University of Virginia in Motor Learning and is married to Jamie. The couple has two children (Easton 3 1/2 and Sierra 1).
Jesse BaumannJesse Baumann joined the Lynchburg College track and field coaching staff in the spring of 2006. He comes to LC from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP), where he was a four-year letter winner for the Pointers. Baumann was a six-time NCAA Division III national meet qualifier and a four-time All-American in the 800 meters, the 1500 meters and Distance Medley Relay. He also earned all-conference honors in both cross country and track, along with being voted both cross country and track team captain, and track team MVP. He graduated from UWSP in the spring 2004, with a degree in watershed management. Baumann will assist mainly with the LC distance runners.
Kyle SteinerKyle Steiner begins his first season and assistant men’s cross country and track and field coach at Lynchburg College. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a major in biology and natural science and a chemistry minor, along with teaching certification in all of these subjects as well as physics.
Over his career Steiner accumulated seven All-American awards including two runner-up finishes in the decathlon and a national championship in the 4x400 meter relay in 2008. Also, he was named conference athlete of the meet three times, and regional field athlete of the year twice. Then Steiner also was named second-team academic All-American twice by CoSIDA/ESPN.
Doug Thomasey begins his first year of coaching at Lynchburg College. He will work primarily with the Hornets’ throwers, as well as decathletes. Thomasey returns to Lynchburg College after a three-year absence.
During his time away from Lynchburg, he earned his Masters degree at the University of Florida, and also taught high school mathematics in Gainesville. Thomasey won the 2008 Florida State Decathlon, won the 2006 USA National Championship in the Double Decathlon, and was runner-up in the 2005 World Championship Double Decathlon.
As a Hornet, Thomasey was a double major in mathematics and Spanish, earning the outstanding senior student in both subject areas. Additionally, he earned Lynchburg’s scholar-athlete award as a sophomore and senior. Athletically, he excelled both on the track and in the field, attaining All-American honors twice in the decathlon. With his combined academic and athletic achievements, Thomasey was awarded one of 29 national NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.
