About Us Academics Admissions Athletics Giving to the College Graduate Studies Library Student Life

Lynchburg College is the home of several unique academic programs that I am sure you will want to investigate.  Our challenging Westover Honors Program, the purpose of which is to attract, challenge, and fulfill academically-gifted students, is open to only a few students each year.

Those of you invited to participate are offered an innovative approach to academic programs specifically designed to prepare you for a world full of the moral and ethical ambiguity created through rapid change.  The Westover Honors Program provides an education both in and out of the classroom, one that engenders initiative, leadership, flexibility, versatility, and collaboration.

The interdisciplinary Lynchburg College Symposium Readings program is an innovative approach to learning that integrates classical texts and regular class material.  The result is depth and broadness of perspectives within the context of traditional course content.  Here we foster critical thinking and problem solving by engaging students in oral and written arguments generated by study of the classics.  Finally, each LC student enrolls in the Senior Symposium as a second semester junior or as a senior.  This interdisciplinary program offers a wide range of educational opportunities—from lectures by prominent professionals in specific fields of inquiry and small discussion groups with terminally-degreed faculty members to group research projects and individual scholarly research.

Generally, all entering freshmen enroll in the Freshman Success Seminar (General Studies 100), a “course,” or rather series of experiences, designed to help you make the necessary transition to college academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular life.  In addition, we offer a variety of other transitional courses that may help you adjust to the rigors of college academics or acquire further grounding in study skills or research.

These include Introduction to Effective College Library Research (General Studies 103), Study Strategies (General Studies 104), and E-Research in the College Library (General Studies 113).

While you are here, you certainly will want to participate in one of our many programs at the unique Claytor Nature Study Center, a 470-acre nature/environmental study center in nearby Bedford County, at the foot of the famous Peaks of Otter.  There you can volunteer to mentor young students from local and regional elementary and middle schools or you can participate in one of the many field trips imbedded in the numerous science and education courses at the College.  And if the sciences attract you but the outdoors does not, you can engage in research and human anatomy study at our campus Human Anatomy Lab, where we store up to four human cadavers donated for student research and study.  This provides a unique opportunity for undergraduates to work in a setting usually found only at medical schools.

Finally, the College offers Graduate Programs in a variety of areas of both Education and Business & Management.  At LC, you can seek your M.B.A. in business administration through the School of Business and Economics or an M.Ed. in community counseling, educational leadership, English education, school counseling, special education, or science education through our School of Education and Human Development.

Lynchburg College has a strong tradition of liberal arts programs ready to challenge you to become the person you have always envisioned.  We accomplish this transformation in our students through a rigorous core curriculum, strong upper-level majors and programs, and lasting emphases on community service and service learning.  Come be a part of a learning environment where you will learn, as one of our students asserts, “to think for yourself and live for others.”
