Internships
The Department of Psychology offers experience in both research and applied settings through internships offered to qualified students who want to gain practical experience in their field of interest.
Students work in area agencies serving abused and emotionally disturbed children, battered women, and adolescents in crisis. Placements have been made with such programs as Head Start, Rape Companion, and the Women's Resource Center.
Computers
A networked computer laboratory has been established recently in the Department of Psychology. Students gain valuable experience through the use of interactive computer software in classes such as Sensory Processes and Perception, Human Learning and Memory, and Abnormal Psychology. The computer lab is networked with the world through the Internet.
Because computer literacy is now a mainstay of employment and higher education, the department continues to explore new opportunities to integrate computers into the curriculum
Research
A new, state-of-the-art laboratory in physiological psychology, partially funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, was established in 1993. In this modern facility students learn first-hand the methods used by neuroscientists and biopsychologists.
Students have the opportunity to do collaborative research with faculty, and they are encouraged to present their research at professional conferences. Some collaborative studies in health psychology and animal behavior have been published in scientific journals such as Physiology and Behavior and Bulletin of the Psychonomic Society.
