Teacher Leadership (post master's)

Faculty advisor: Dr. John Walker

Program description: This certificate program provides individuals who have already completed a graduate degree with advanced coursework related to school leadership.

Designed to meet the needs of: General education and special education teachers who do not intend to seek school administration leadership positions but who are seeking advanced training in order to serve in instructional leadership positions (e.g., department chair, grade level coordinator).

Objectives:

  • Research, analyze, evaluate, and apply curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment to improve the academic achievement of all students
  • Design and apply instructional activities and strategies to meet the challenges of learners with diverse needs
  • Engage in self-directed professional behaviors to provide leadership in educational organizations, school improvement efforts, staff development, and policy development within the school, school division, and beyond

Pre-requisites: Master's degree in a related educational field

Course requirements (12 credits):
EDCI 690 Principles of Leadership
EDLS 603 Legal and Ethical Issues
EDLS 646 Improving the School Structure and Climate
EDLS 653 Supervision and Evaluation of Instruction
(other courses may be substituted with the permission of the faculty advisor)

Further degree opportunities: If individuals wish to complete licensure requirements in order to become a school administrator or a central office supervisor, all of the coursework within this certificate is applicable. An additional sequence of courses, approximately 9-15 credits (depending on background), would be needed for the completion of of the Administration and Supervision Endorsement (PreK-12) as well as a second master's degree in educational leadership.
