Autism Spectrum Disorders

Program description: The ASD Certificate Program provides intensive training to individuals working with children and adolescents across the autism spectrum. The coursework provides an understanding of the nature and needs of students with autism as well as information on intervention strategies.

Designed to meet the needs of: Special education teachers, general education classroom teachers, counselors, psychologists, community agency personnel, and parents.

Objectives:

  • To understand the unique learning characteristics of individuals with autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger syndrome, as a basis for designing individualized educational programs
  • To be able to effectively address the needs of students with ASD in terms of designing social skills instruction based on evidence-based practices
  • To be able to effectively address the needs of students with ASD in terms of designing communication skills instruction based on evidence-based practices
  • To understand the factors that influence behavior, including sensory motor challenges and the components of behavioral analysis in order to design effective behavior intervention plans to address problem behaviors

Pre-requisites: SPED 600 Survey of Special Education (or the equivalent)

SPED 670 Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders
SPED 671 Instructional & Behavioral Assessment & Programming for Students with ASD
SPED 672 Medical & Sensory Aspects of ASD
SPED 694 Field Experience w/Students with ASD (3)

Further degree opportunities: The autism spectrum disorder certificate can be incorporated into the M.Ed. in special education program and represents one of the four options for emphases within that degree program.
