Two Challenge Grants for Lynchburg College

John D. Bower '57 Veterans Scholarship Challenge

Dr. John D. Bower has donated $250,000 to establish the Dr. John D. Bower Veterans Scholarship Fund. Additionally, Dr. Bower pledges to give another $250,000 to this scholarship fund if the College raises $250,000 in matching gifts and pledges for this scholarship fund by December 31, 2012. This Fund is established for the benefit of veterans of the United States Armed Forces. A portion of this fund shall be distributed annually as scholarships to eligible veteran students. Furthermore, when the fund reaches a level of $750,000 or more through additional gifts, the College will establish the Dr. John D. Bower Veterans Advocacy Center which will provide appropriate military awareness training to faculty, staff, and the campus community as we proactively seek to honor and assist our veterans.

Nygaard Challenge for Health Science Simulation Center

Lynchburg College Trustee Ellen Nygaard has pledged $65,000 as a challenge to help fund the development of a new Regional Health Sciences Simulation and Virtual Learning Center to be used by Lynchburg College's School of Health Sciences. The total start-up cost for this project is $662,829, and the Center will be self-supporting after the first year via tuition and fees from students, as well as fees from others who use the Center for training purposes. This educational facility will provide opportunities each year for 85 nursing students, doctor of physical therapy students, and other health careers students to develop health care knowledge and techniques in a state-of-the-art simulation environment. The College must raise a minimum of $130,000 in new gifts and pledges in order to claim this two-to-one challenge gift.

What counts toward reaching the challenges?

All gifts, pledges, and corporate matching gifts designated for these projects will enable Lynchburg College to claim these challenge gifts.
