Lynchburg Men's Basketball Falls 80-77 to Frostburg State

BOX SCORE

Steven EcholsSALEM, VA - The Lynchburg College men's basketball team fell 80-77 to Frostburg State in day two action from the Jimmy V Classic hosted by Roanoke College.

FSU led for the majority of the first-half by a narrow margin and went into half-time with a two point lead, 38-36. The game was close for most of the second-half, but a Brad Kenney (Advance, NC/Bishop McGuinness) layup tied it at 61-61 with 10:14 left. The Bobcats then went on a 13-4 run to pull ahead by nine points, 74-65, at the 6:02 mark to force a Hornets timeout. Lynchburg responded with a run of their own, outscoring FSU 12-3 to even the contest at 77-77 with 39 seconds left to sit up another thriller in Salem.

A LC foul with 27 second left sent FSU to the line for two, but they only converted one of two to give LC a chance to win the game on the final possession. A Bobcat defender fell down, leaving Nate Campbell (Cary, NC/Cary) open in the paint, but a post entry pass went too high and out of bounds to give the ball back to Frostburg with 12 seconds remaining. Lynchburg was forced to foul, and Steven Ogg buried both FTs to put FSU up 80-77 with nine seconds remaining. Michael Glover (Verona, VA/Spotswood) was fouled to prevent a three point basket at the two second mark to go to the charity stripe for two shots. Glover was unable to make the first and intentionally missed the second to give the Hornets a chance for a three at the buzzer but the miracle was not answered as FSU hung on for the three-point victory.

Lynchburg's (1-3) Steven Echols (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle) finished the game with 22 points (7-16 FGs, 3-7 threes, 5-6 FTs) four steals, and four rebounds. Echols needs just 122 points to enter the 1,000 point plateau. Campbell posted 15 points on 6-11 shooting along with five boards and KC Mendez (San Antonio, TX/Winston Churchill) posted 11 points and five caroms.

Busha Koffa led five Frostburg State (3-0) players in double digits as he contributed with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Brian Anderson and Terrance Taylor each chipped in with 14 points, Nick Sefcik tallied 11 points and six assists, and Jamal Bracken collected 11 points.

Each team shot a high percentage from the floor with FSU converting at a 48.1% clip compared to 44.8% for the Hornets. LC drained seven threes to just three for the Bobcats, but Frostburg had significant advantages in rebounds (41 to 30) and free throws (25-37 to 18-25). Each team was also plagued by turnovers in the high-paced affair with FSU registering 25 to 20 for LC.

Lynchburg returns to the court on November 30 as they travel to Lexington, VA, to play the NCAA Division I Keydets of Virginia Military Institute at 7 p.m.
