
The Visual Art Scholarship Competition offers students with great skill and promise the opportunity to enhance their abilities in the arts.
While all students are encouraged to participate in visual art at the college level, freshmen and transfer students with special talents and abilities in visual art will be recognized with individual scholarships. Lynchburg College is proud to host the Visual Art Scholarship Competition to recognize outstanding art talent among prospective students. Visual Art scholarships are renewable for three additional years beyond the freshman year. In addition, Visual Art Scholarship awards may be combined with other merit-based scholarships awarded by the college. All students are eligible and encouraged to apply, regardless of major.

$1,000, $2,000, and $3,000 awards
($4,000, $8,000, and $12,000, four-year totals respectively)

Freshmen and transfer students who have been admitted to the College are eligible to compete, so complete your admissions application soon!
• Admission and Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship Competition applications must be postmarked by Friday, February 26, 2010.
• Scholarship candidates must be admitted to Lynchburg College before they can compete in this competition. The admission application fee is waived if the application is submitted with the Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship application.
• Students may compete in more than one area (art, music, or theatre) but may only accept one scholarship award.
• Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the scholarship selection committee.
• Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship Competition applicants who wish to be considered in conjunction with the Scholarship Competition must submit their application by February 26, 2010. All other applications will be reviewed on a space-available basis.
• After the student's competition application and supplemental materials have been reviewed, qualified candidates will receive an invitation for the on-campus competition.
Portfolio Review Information
The portfolio review is to demonstrate and reflect a student's technical and design abilities. It must contain only original work, both two and/or three dimensional, and digital, as applicable. Photocopied work is not acceptable.
The portfolio review judges are Lynchburg College art faculty members.
The portfolio will consist of the following:
1. Eight to ten works that demonstrate the student's range of proficiencies and best document the depth and breadth of an applicant's potential in art
2. A typed, double-spaced, one-page statement indicating the student's desire to pursue the art scholarship competition and future goals as they relate to art.
The portfolio will demonstrate a student's:
1. Ability to create art/design from a personal perspective that embodies a sense of creativity and an awareness of context
2. Awareness of the effective use of media, tools, and materials
3. Command of the formal elements of art within the appropriate contexts
4. Ability to establish personal criteria, set goals, and pursue independent creative production
5. Breadth and depth of technical skill in a specific discipline
6. Ability to present finished works of art/design appropriately for public review
The portfolio review process:
1. The student will arrive and arrange his/her work on indicated studio tables.
2. The student will introduce himself/herself to the art faculty and initiate a discussion of his/her work by indicating the nature of the pieces (objectives, media, etc.).
3. Faculty will engage the student in a conversation about the work and provide concluding observations.
