(Changes are effective for 2008-09)
- Students are enrolled in Lynchburg College for the full academic session. However, tuition will be billed on a semester basis. Therefore, for withdrawals prior to the beginning of a semester, a full refund will be made for that semester.
- If a student withdraws or is separated from the College for any reason other than a disability once the semester has started, a refund of the comprehensive fee (tuition, room and board) is made on the following basis:
Refund Schedule | Refund Rate |
Weeks 1-2 | 90 percent |
Weeks 3-4 | 50 percent |
Weeks 5-8 | 25 percent |
After the eighth week of the semester, there is no refund.
- For a medical withdrawal, in which the student is disabled for the remainder of the semester as certified by a legally qualified physician, the refund is 100 percent of the unused portion of semester fees (prorated). Drug abuse and normal pregnancies are not considered disabilities.
- In the event the College takes a recess from classes during a pandemic, students will continue to be enrolled. There would be no refund for the semester charges for tuition, room or board unless a student officially withdraws. In those cases, the refund would be based on which week in the semester the student officially withdraws.
- Federal regulations governing Title IV financial aid programs require that the aid office determine the amount of the refund that must be paid back to the financial aid programs if the student received aid for educational expenses. Therefore, some or all of a student's refund may be allocated to financial aid programs and not refunded to the student.
TUITION REFUND PLAN
Arrangements have been made by the College with a major insurance underwriter, the OneBeacon Insurance Companies, Boston, Massachusetts, to provide financial protection in the event of withdrawal from College during the academic year for medical reasons.
The Tuition Refund Plan provides a refund of unused College fees according to the schedule of benefits described below.
BENEFITS ARE PAID FOR
MEDICAL WITHDRAWAL
- 100 percent of the unused semester fees (prorated), provided student is disabled for the balance of the semester. This is for any disability as certified by a legally qualified physician.
DEFINITIONS
- Each participating student is protected from the opening date of the semester to the close of the semester, provided that the application is made prior to the opening date. Coverage is on a per semester basis only.
- “Withdrawal” means complete severance from classes for the balance of the semester and loss of scholastic credit. Temporary absence followed by a resumption of classes within the same semester is not a basis for claim.
- The term upon which refunds are based consists of the consecutive calendar days in each semester (including weekends, holidays and vacations) commencing with the first day of formal academic instruction. Orientation, registration, and graduation days are not included in the semester. Change from resident to day status is not a basis for claim.
- Benefits do not cover, except as specified in the policy, the inability of the College to operate and provide formal academic instruction, including closure for any reason.
NOT COVERED UNDER PLAN
- war or any act of war
- taking part in a riot
- pregnancy and/or childbirth
- use of any drug, narcotic, or agent which is similarly classed or has similar effect unless given by and while under the care of a doctor
- suicide or intentionally self-inflected injury or self-inflicted sickness
- alcoholism or use of alcohol
- nuclear reaction, radiation, or radioactive contamination
- failure to attend classes for any reason other than injury or sickness
- injury or sickness for which medical care was received within 180 days prior to the effective date
CLAIMS
Claim forms with instructions are available at the Business Office. Claims must be reported within twenty days from the date of occurrence, or as soon thereafter as is reasonably possible.
COST
There is no extra charge for this protection, since that cost has been included in the College's Comprehensive Tuition Fee.
