
Women's basketball began at Lynchburg College sometime prior to 1909. The first intercollegiate games were played during the 1924-25 season as the Hornets completed a 2-1 campaign. The following year saw LC compile a 2-3 record. World War II forced the cancellation of women's basketball at the college, but play resumed after the war. The team was a consistent winner during the 1950s and had an 8-1-1 record in 1952.
Dr. Jacqueline Asbury, former Dean of Lynchburg College, ushered in the modern era of women's basketball at the College, coaching the Hornets to a remarkable 71-4 (.947 winning percentage) record from 1963-68. This included a perfect 23-0 campaign during the 1964-65 season. The 23 wins stand as a school record for the Hornets.
Betty Jackson (class of 1983) began her outstanding career at LC in 1979, leading the Hornets to 56 victories in four seasons (56-38). She left her mark in the College record books with seven school records, including career rebounds (1,139). Jackson is also second in career points and was named a Kodak College All-America following her senior year.
Dr. Marie Lewis, former volleyball coach and professor in the school of Heath Science and Human Performance, coached the team from 1972-92. Lewis led the Hornets to nine winning seasons in 19 years, including marks of 18-7 and 16-9 in 1989-90 and 1990-91, respectively.
Kelly Fackler '97 burst on the scene in 1993, taking the ODAC by storm during her first year when she garnered first-team All-ODAC and ODAC Rookie of the Year accolades. Fackler closed out her career in 1997 as the all-time leading scorer in LC history with 1,556 points.
Richie Waggoner took over the reigns of the LC program in 1999 and led the Hornets to 52 wins and ODAC Tournament berths in three of his last five years. Guard Abby Pyzik became the first Lynchburg women's basketball player to earn all-state honors, taking first-team accolates in 2003 and 2004. Caroline Wesley earned first-team All-State and All-ODAC honors in 2006-07 and was named the ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Coach Stephanie Tobey took over the reigns in 2005-06 and saw her squad advance into the ODAC Tournament in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Brittany Dahn and Kristina Darby became the first LC duo to garner All-ODAC honors in the same season since 1985.
