THE HISTORY SEMINAR: FALL 2009
The History Department at Lynchburg College sponsors a History Seminar to be held at selected times each semester when Lynchburg College students and faculty gather to hear a short paper presented by one of their own. Topics range widely over the broad field of history, and the presentation of papers is limited to members (students and faculty) of the History Department. Papers from across disciplines that have a historical aspect are welcome, as well as offers from any who have work to present in a friendly and collegial environment.
This fall, the History Seminar will meet on Wednesday, September 30, Wednesday, October 28, and Wednesday, November 11, from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m. in Schewel 231. In each case, the paper presentation will be followed by a discussion, and questions and participation are invited from those attending.
Our first paper will be presented on September 30 by Professor Phillip Stump of the History Department at Lynchburg College. The title of his paper is, "The Council of Constance and the ending of the Great Schism."
On October 28, we will hear from David Zimring, who is completing his dissertation in history at the University of Virginia, and is an adjunct in the LC History Department. The title of his paper will be, "No Longer a Yankee: Native Northerners Who Joined the Confederate Armies."
On November 11, David Hageman, who teaches in the LC History Department and is completing a dissertation in history from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), will present "‘We Got One Man Where Three Men Was': Deindustrialization and its Effects on Chicago Meatpacking Workers, 1955-1965."
Again, all are welcome to the seminar, now in its second year.
