History Seminar

The History Department at Lynchburg College sponsors a History Seminar, held at selected times each semester, where students and faculty gather to hear a short paper presented by one of their own. Topics range widely over the broad field of history. Participation is not limited to members (students and faculty) of the History Department; instead, papers from across disciplines that have a historical aspect are welcome to be given in the friendly and collegial environment.

For the Spring Semester 2012, the History Seminar will meet on February 1, February 29, and March 21 (all Wednesdays) from 4:30-5:45 p.m. in Schewel 231.

Our first paper was presented on February 1 by Dr. Clifton Potter, professor of history at Lynchburg College. The title of his presentation was "Gloriana and the Historians: From David Hume to A. F. Pollard."

On February 29, we will hear from two of our undergraduate students. Tess Evans will present "A New Revival: The Influence of African-American Religion on Plantation Women in the Antebellum South." Kelly Childress will present "The Georgia Home Front: The War the Women Fought."

On March 21, Heather Weidner, an adjunct at Randolph Macon College and sometime adjunct at Lynchburg College, will present "Henry Norwood and the King: ethnography and political discourse in the seventeenth century Atlantic."

On Thursday, February 16, the History Department will share in the sponsorship of a special panel of papers for Black History Month, From Slavery to Emancipation: African Americans and Working the Land, 1770 to 1877. This event is also sponsored by the John M. Turner Lecture in the Humanities and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest. The presentations will be given in the Sydnor Performance Hall, Elliot & Rosel Schewel Hall, at 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. For information, contact Dr. Scott Amos, Department of History at 434.544.8328 or amos.n@lynchburg.edu.
