No. 8 Hornet Field Hockey Falls at No. 9 Rowan 2-1 in Overtime

LC Box Score at Rowan

Sarah Cates and the LC defense faced 21 RU shots Saturday.                GLASSBORO, NJ - The Lynchburg College field hockey team scored first, but could not hold the lead as the No. 8 Hornets fell to Rowan University 2-1 in overtime in non-conference play Saturday.

The loss was the team's second consecutive loss, as the Hornets fell to Christopher Newport University Thursday with the same score. The Hornets (15-4) got on the board first in the opening half, as freshman Lindsay Leonard (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) scored her 10th of the season, thanks to a tip-in off of an Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) shot. Leonard's goal at the 22:53 mark was her third score in the last three games, as she joined a group of five LC scorers with 10 or more goals on the season.

After intermission, the host Profs (13-4) went on the offensive as they outshot the Hornets 13-0 in the second stanza. With just under 14 minutes to play in regulation, Nicole Valianti scored to knot the game at one on an assist from Lauren Ross. In overtime, Valianti gathered a pass only 4:41 into the extra session from Jenna Lombardo and found the back of the cage for the game-winner.

The hosts would outshoot the Hornets 21-5, while being awarded 10 penalty corners to the Hornets' three. Lynchburg keeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) kept her teammates in it, as she made seven saves, including six in the second and overtime periods.

Lynchburg now begins its post-season schedule, as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament starts Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest against No. 4 seeded Randolph-Macon College on Shellenberger Field.
