Christopher Newport Ends Lynchburg's 11-Game Win Streak Thursday

LC Box Score vs. CNU

LYNCHBURG, VA - Christopher Newport's Katelyn Yandle scored the game-winning goal early in the first half and the No. 14 Lady Captain defense held stout in the second half in holding onto a 2-1 victory over Lynchburg College in non-conference action from Shellenberger Field.

Erin Funkhouser scored the lone tally in a 2-1 LC loss to CNU.                Lynchburg's 11-game win streak dating back to Sept. 16 was snapped tonight, as all three LC losses this season have come against ranked teams. The scoring opened 5:51 into the contest, as Lynchburg senior Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) finished a pass from Shelly Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester).

CNU's Kylie Cale answered back at the 9:42 mark of the opening half, scoring with help from Taylor Harrell to even the score at one. Yandle then tallied the game-winner just 1:28 later, scoring an unassisted goal off of a loose ball in the circle.

The second half story was the CNU (13-3) defense, which faced 26 second half shots and did not allow a tally from the Hornet offense, which ranks second in the country. With just under five minutes to play, Lynchburg lofted a shot over everyone by Stephanie Bair. Bair raised her stick up and tipped the ball over the crossbar to deny LC's best scoring opportunity.

LC (15-3) outshot its visitors 33-9 and was awarded 23 penalty corners to the Lady Captains' eight. Christopher Newport keeper Emma Stout made seven saves in net while Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) stopped three shots for the host Hornets. Senior defender Erin Majerowicz (Pasadena, MD/Chesapeake) had a solid game as well, and also she broke the Lynchburg College all-time games started record with her 84th career start.

Lynchburg continues its tough stretch with a trip to Glassboro, NJ to take on No. 9 Rowan University at 1 p.m.
