Hornet Volleyball Fends Off Mary Washington Charge for Thrilling 3-2 Win

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College volleyball team fought off a late charge from the Eagles of the University of Mary Washington in taking a thrilling 3-2 win in non-conference play from Turner Gym Saturday afternoon.

Jasmine Murphy paced LC with 17 digs in a 3-2 win over Mary Washington Saturday.                The Hornets (17-7), who were recently ranked regionally for the first time since head coach Beth Ellinger took over in 2006, had to fight to get the win after taking the first two games with scores of 25-21 and 25-23. UMW (16-9) won game three 25-23 before chalking up a 25-22 win in game four.

In the deciding fifth game Lynchburg battled back from an early deficit, and at 14-14 got a huge solo block point from Michelle Boucher (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) to set up the game-winner on a kill from Elena Kritter (Culpeper, VA/Rappahannock).

Lynchburg was paced offensively by the 17 kills from Boucher, while Kritter posted a double-double of 14 kills and 12 digs. Chelsea Jones (Richmond, VA/Monacan) enjoyed her Senior Day with 11 kills, while freshman Rachel Huffman (Virginia Beach, VA/Bayside) stuffed the stat sheet with eight kills, four solo blocks and an ace.

Freshman Brooke Moughon (Mathews, VA/Mathews) led the Hornets with 28 assists, while fellow newcomer Rachel Turk (Salem, VA/Salem) assisted on 17 kills. Defensively, LC was led by the 17 digs from Jasmine Murphy (Shipman, VA/Nelson County) and the 13 saves from senior Savannah Tinsley (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass).

The win marked the Hornets seventh in their last nine times out, while also earning the squads second win over a regionally-ranked opponent this season. The Hornets will travel up Route 29 Tuesday evening for its final conference match of the season against Sweet Briar College at 6:30 p.m.
