Lindsay Leonard Nets Two in a No. 9 Lynchburg Hockey 3-0 Win over Eastern Mennonite

LC Box Score vs. EMU

Lindsay Leonard netted two in a 3-0 shutout of EMU Friday night.                LYNCHBURG, VA - Freshman Lindsay Leonard (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) scored two first-half goals just over nine minutes apart as the No. 9 Lynchburg College field hockey squad defeated Eastern Mennonite University 3-0 in a pivotal Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest from Shellenberger Field.

The win means Lynchburg will stay at home for the entirety of the ODAC Tournament which starts on Nov. 2. The win was the first regular season win over Eastern Mennonite since 2006, with the shutout marking the first for LC over the Lady Royals since a 2-0 blanking back in 2001.

The Hornets (15-2/7-0 ODAC) got on the board 20:08 into the contest thanks to Leonard's eighth score of the year. Leonard corralled a loose ball that was shoved into the box by Signey Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester), and snuck it by EMU (8-7/6-1 ODAC) keeper Becky Nolt for the opening strike.

Leonard again found the back of the cage at 29:12 of the first half, this time receiving a long stretch pass from Jordan Warrington (Ocean View, DE/Indian River), and depositing it in the net for a 2-0 advantage LC would hold at the half. The Hornets finished the scoring for the evening just 2:34 into the second stanza, as Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) tipped in a shot from Caitlin Gibb (North East, MD/Rising Sun).

The Lynchburg defense was the story, as the back liners held the 24th-best scoring offense in the nation to only five shots. Senior netminder Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made one save, but made multiple clears on crosses that allowed LC to counter. Nolt made four saves for EMU, who were outshot 26-5 and also lost the penalty corner battle 13-7.

The Hornets are off for six days before hosting the Lady Captains of Christopher Newport University at 6 p.m. next Thursday, October 29 on Shellenberger Field.
