HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The 25th ranked Lynchburg College men's soccer team extended its undefeated streak to an astounding 11 games with a double overtime victory over the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday afternoon in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest. This game marks the fourth time this season that Lynchburg has played a double overtime contest, and the Hornets hold a 2-0-2 record in these tussles.

In a tightly contested contest featuring two of the top teams in the South Atlantic Region and two of the best defenses in the ODAC, goals came at a premium in a result that will prove pivotal for seeding in the ODAC Tournament.

A call that one would have expected would give the hosts a major advantage, an LC player was credited with a red card in the 40th minute, making the Hornets having to play one man down the remainder of the contest. The game was scoreless for the first 70 minutes of the contest despite the Hornets having already played man down for 30 minutes. Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) opened the scoring in the 71st minute as he pocketed the first tally of the game at the 70:31 mark.

The officials evened the playing field in the 79th minute as a Tiger was tabbed with a red card, forcing both teams to play with just 10 men on the field as opposed to the usual 11. The Tigers proved to be unphased by the red card as Brett Chonko posted an unassisted score in the 86th minute. The defenses prevented either team from firing off a shot for the remainder of regulation to send the contest into overtime.

In the first extra session, LC outshot HSC 3-1 and John Robert Plyler stopped a Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) shot in the 95th minute to help ward off the Hornets. Lynchburg only got off one shot in the second overtime, but that proved to be all that was needed as freshman Scott Colman (Yorktown, VA/York) made his first collegiate goal one to remember.

Lynchburg (12-1-2/6-0-2 ODAC) outshot Hampden-Sydney (13-3-0/6-2-0 ODAC) 17-8 while the hosts held a slim 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. The game was typified by physical play as 36 collective fouls were called (20 HSC, 16 LC), eight yellow card were handed out (6 HSC, 2 LC), and each team was given a red card. Under ODAC rules, any player given a red card is automatically suspended for the following contest.

Lynchburg returns to the pitch this Saturday as the hosts for the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College with the game time slated for 1 p.m. The game will also be Senior Day for five seniors: Matt Sturdivant, Brown, Reed, Stephen Legg, and Shawn Bender.
