Celebrate the New Year in Rome, the Eternal City. You’ll be on visual sensory overload as you experience firsthand some of the greatest art and architecture the world has ever produced. On this program, students explore how cemeteries, palaces, churches, and in fact, how a city can become a museum.

*Participation in this program will fulfill the Fine Arts General Education Requirement. Students may enroll in either "Introduction to Visual Art" (ART 110SA) or "Photography 1" (ART 166SA).

Cost: $3,575 (program fee based on 30 participants); $600 (tuition, 3 hours, with Experiential Learning Grant)

Spring Break 2011

These programs are part of semester-long courses offered on campus at LC.

PeruPeru: Past and Present (HIST 377N)

This course will focus on the history of the Incas and the Spanish colonial legacy as well as Peru's culture, politics, and current economic challenges. Over spring break students will have the exciting opportunity to experience Peruvian art, culture, and history firsthand during the study abroad component of the course. While in Peru students will explore some of the country's best known archaeological locations, such as Machu Picchu, in addition to museums and other cultural sites. Peru's varied landscape will also be revealed with visits to the capital city of Lima and the colonial city of Cuzco.

England: Churchill Seminar (HONR 342)

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill remains an iconic figure of the 20th century. Soldier, journalist, politician, Prime Minister, author, artist, historian, and savior of the Western world, Churchill was truly a unique figure among his 20th century contemporaries. This colloquium examines Churchill's pivotal role in world and British history. We will engage in a political history ride through the 20th century. Highlights include WWI, WWII, the end of the British Empire, Churchill's role in extending the unique relationship that exists between the U.S. and Great Britain, and finally the dawn of the Cold War and the rise of Soviet Communism in East Europe. Students enrolled in this colloquium must participate in the spring break study abroad program to London.

China: The Business World of a Rising Economy (MGMT 377N)

Discover an emerging economy firsthand with visits to dynamic corporations and manufacturing facilities in Beijing and Shanghai and excursions to the Great Wall and rural villages. While in China, LC students will have the opportunity to meet students at Chinese universities, which will enhance the cross-cultural experience.

Costa RicaCosta Rica: Spanish Language and Tico Culture

Improve your Spanish language skills and complete your foreign language requirement through experiencing the vibrant culture of Costa Rica. Students will take classes at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Costa Rica (UNA) in Heredia and live with host families to maximize their language learning and cultural experience. Excursions will include visits to points of interest in San Jose, national parks, and activities related to eco-tourism. Students will receive transfer credit from UNA for SPAN 201/202 or SPAN 340/398 for a total of six credit hours.

Prerequisite: SPAN 102 or placement into SPAN 201 from testing

Great BritainGreat Britain - London and Edinburgh: Comparative Criminology (SOCI 377N)

This program offers students a view of the fascinating and sometimes dark criminological history of London and Edinburgh and a glimpse of the British penal system of today. By plunging into a world rife with notorious characters and infamous sites, participants will increase their understanding of the history of criminology, but also the United Kingdom's general history, literature, and lore.

How Wars End - WWI, WWII, and the Cold War: Paris, Prague, Budapest, Berlin (POLI 377N and ENGL 377Y)

How Wars EndTravel from Paris to Berlin and experience the conflicts of the 20th century firsthand while studying the literature of war and the processes that promote peace. Political science and literature combine to make this a truly unique experience. Students will visit such important sites as the Normandy beaches, the Auschwitz concentration camp, WWI battlefields in Belgium, Berlin's Memorial to the German Resistance, and many other significant historical sites.

Enjoy a "European" experience in one of the oldest cities in North America while studying at LC's newest sister school. Laval University will host LC students for a language and cultural immersion program, which includes language instruction, a home-stay experience, and cultural activities. The beautiful city of Quebec and its environs on the St. Lawrence River will provide some great sight-seeing.

N.B. - Students can fulfill their foreign language general education requirement by taking the equivalent of FREN 201 at Laval University after completing FREN 102 at LC.

St. LuciaSt. Lucia: Island Exploration through Service Learning (EDUC 377M or COMM 377Q)

Make a difference and interact with the local culture by participating in an international service learning experience. Each activity is targeted to the student's major program. For example, education students conduct developmental screenings for young children to assess their readiness for school entry while international relations students work with youth at local schools and community centers. Communication studies students will work on documentary film production. In addition, students will have the opportunity to explore this tropical island as they work jointly with St. Lucians during their service learning projects.

South KoreaSouth Korea: An Intercultural Exploration of Korean Culture at Hannam University

Students will experience a new culture and way of life during their visit to LC's sister university in Daejeon, South Korea. Classes focus on Korean language and culture while students explore Buddhist temples and taste Korean cuisine with their Korean "buddies." The program's "buddy system" pairs LC students with Hannam students who introduce their international friends to Korean life and culture. This system enhances the student experience, fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendship building. Activities include pottery-making, karaoke night, and a two-day excursion to Seoul, the South Korean capital. Students enroll in a three-credit course at Hannam University and receive transfer credit through this experience.

Costs: $200 application fee; international airfare to/from South Korea and personal expenses

TGITurkey, Greece, and Italy: Ancient Rhetoric and Contemporary Mediterranean Visions (COMM 101SA and G S 377M)

Journey back to antiquity through this exploration of the Mediterranean world. The great cities of the ancient world are included on this trip of a lifetime: Istanbul, Ephesus, Troy, Athens, Mycenae, Aphrodisias, Hierapolis, Pompeii, Rome, Siracusa, and Agrigento. Together we will explore the culture of the Mediterranean - both ancient and contemporary - while we study the great rhetoricians of the Western world.

Uganda: Community Health in the Global South (HP 377M)

Travel to the Gulu region of Uganda where you will work directly with local leaders and citizens to promote public health initiatives. Dr. Olsen and the Sports Outreach Institute (headquartered in Lynchburg) have extensive experience within the region. This hands-on experience will allow students to examine the importance of community health and well-being and its impact on development in countries of the Global South.
