Michael Butzgy Wins Virginia Intercollegiate Tournament

VA Intercollegiate Tournament Results

                WINTERGREEN, VA - Senior Michael Butzgy (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) won his first collegiate golf tournament on Monday, as he shot a three-under par 141 over the two-day Virginia Intercollegiate Tournament held at the par-72 Wintergreen Resort.

                Butzgy fired a second-round 71 to clinch the win, as he held off Max Wyndorf from Randolph-Macon College. Butzgy opened the tournament with a round of 70, which was the top carded 18 holes of the two-days. The round of 70 was also his low round of the season, and tied for his best time out as a Hornet.

                The Hornets finished fifth, booking a 50-over 626 for the tournament. Daniel Bost (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) tied for 21st with a 14-over 158 over the two-days, while junior Joey Brunet (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellum) shot a 78 Sunday and an 80 on Monday to tie for 24th place.

                Freshman Matthew Lipscomb (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) opened with a round of 78, shooting a cumulative 168 to finish in 43rd place, while Dusty Scott (Ivor, VA/Tidewater Academy) shot a 182 for the tournament. Randolph-Macon won the team title, edging Christopher Newport, Hampden Sydney and Washington & Lee all by four strokes.

                The golf team will relax now for the winter monthes before picking back up in the spring of 2010.
