Second-Half Surge Lifts Lynchburg Men's Soccer to 4-0 Win Over Guilford

BOX SCORE

Pat BrownLYNCHBURG, VA - In a game marred by six yellow cards, the Lynchburg College men's soccer team was able to prevail over Guilford College by a score of 4-0 on Saturday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Quakers of Guilford were able to keep the Hornets at bay for the entire first-half, but a timely insertion of Shane Spanninger (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) in the 64th minute provided the spark to get Lynchburg on board. The Hornets lost possession of the ball, but Spanninger fought to retain possession and his hard work led to him notching the assist on Jim Rochow's (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) goal at 66:49. The goal energized Lynchburg and Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) stretched his goal-scoring streak to five straight contests as he delivered a header off a corner kick into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 contest. A Guilford foul in the box led to Kyle Symczak (Woodbridge, VA/Woodbridge) converting on a penalty kick at 75:59, and Joe Skaja (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) concluded the scoring with a tally in the 88th minute.

Lynchburg (11-1-1/5-0-1 ODAC) outshot Guilford (7-7-1/2-4 ODAC) 26-7, including a 16-3 margin after intermission. LC also maintained a significant advantage in corner kicks at 13-1. Guilford committed 18 fouls to 14 for Lynchburg and six yellow cards were handed out to the Quakers.

Lynchburg begins a crucial four-game stretch as they play three of the four top teams in the ODAC to close out the season. The first game in the stretch will take place in Salem, VA, as Roanoke College and Lynchburg will battle for sole possession of first place in the ODAC at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 17.
