Testing Information

The Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as many other states, requires passing scores on a nationally standardized test. The Virginia Board of Education has established the following requirements:

(VCLA) Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment
The writing and reading portions of the VCLA are required for all licensure candidates. The passing score of 235 in reading and writing is required. The VCLA is also available on the computer by appointment at Pearson Testing Centers but requires advanced registration at www.va.nesinc.com

(RVE) Reading for Virginia Educators - Elementary and Special Education Assessment
Elementary and special education students are required to take the RVE for licensure after July 1, 2011. Information is available at www.ets.org/praxis. The passing score of 157 is required for licensure. The testing codes are (5306) on the computer or (0306) paper version. More information can be found at: www.ets.org/praxis/va/
(RVE) Reading for Virginia Educators: Reading Specialist Assessment is for our M.Ed. in Reading students only. Passing scores on this assessment are 162. www.doe.virginia.gov/administrators/superintendents_memos/2011/151-11.shtml

Praxis I Math is required for all students completing an approved program at Lynchburg College or a composite on Praxis I - Reading, Writing, and Math

SAT scores as a substitute test for Praxis I
On March 24, 2004, the Board of Education approved the use of the SAT® as a substitute test for Praxis I (Reading, Writing, and Mathematics) required for initial licensure. The board approved a score of 1000 on the SAT®, taken prior to April 1, 1995, with at least 450 on the verbal and 510 on the mathematics tests
or
a score of 1100 on the SAT, taken after April 1, 1995, with at least 530 on the verbal and 530 on the mathematics tests as a substitute for Praxis I.
Please note that the SAT® was approved as a substitute test ONLY for Praxis I; individuals also must meet the Praxis II (subject area assessment) for initial licensure.

ACT scores as a substitute test for Praxis I
ACT taken after April 1, 1995 requires a composite ACT score of 24 and ACT mathematics score of 22 anda combined score of 46 on English plus Reading score. This ACT approved substitute is only for Praxis I.

Praxis II - Content Knowledge
Praxis II in the subject area is required for all licensure candidates except Special Education. Registration and test information including schedules are available at www.ets.org/praxis
