Men’s Soccer Wins 2OT Thriller vs. W&L 3-2

LYNCHBURG, VA – The men’s soccer team required two overtime periods to dispatch of the Generals of Washington & Lee University 2-0 in double overtime in torrential downpour Saturday night.

The play on the field was as wild as the rain. W&L got on board in the eighth minute in unconventional fashion. A Lynchburg defender kicked the ball to clear it out of the box, but it would bounce off W&L’s James Pymm’s knee as it squeaked past the goalie. Lynchburg answered back less than two minutes later with an equally odd goal. Donald Hart III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) received a pass from Jim Rochow (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) and hit the bar, however, it went straight to the ground and bounced into the net.

The game remained a 1-1 contest until the 58th minute when Pat Brown (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) headed in a corner kick from Tyler Romano (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) to put LC on top 2-1. Pymm struck again for Washington & Lee in the 75th minute off a feed from John Stalle to send the game into overtime.

LC fired off five shots  in the first OT with several going just wide of the net. After 10 more minutes of scoreless soccer, the game went into a second overtime. At the 102:33 mark, Stephen Legg (Newport News, VA/Denbigh Baptist) controlled the ball in the box after it bounced off several players heads and delivered LC its seventh win of the season.

Lynchburg (7-1-1/3-0-1 ODAC) outshot W&L (2-2-2/0-1-1 ODAC) 24-7. The Hornets had a slim 8-7 edge in corner kicks while General keeper Ben Bartlett notched five saves.

Lynchburg travels to Greensboro, NC, on Wednesday to play USA South Conference foe Greensboro College at 4 p.m.
