No. 14 Lynchburg Rallies Late for 4-2 Win over St. Mary's (MD) College
LYNCHBURG, VA - Junior midfielder Jenny Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) scored with 1:50 left in the game to put No. 14 Lynchburg College up one, completing a comeback from a 2-0 first-half deficit as the Hornets knocked off St. Mary's (MD) College 4-2 Saturday on a soggy, rainy afternoon from Shellenberger Field.
Jenny Weir's game-winner was the Hornet's second goal of the concluding period, coming about 10 minutes after Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) notched her 14th of the season to pull the game even. Allie Weir ended the game with no time on the clock with a goal off of a penalty corner with help from Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) and Jenny Weir.
The game did not start out well for Lynchburg (7-2), as it allowed two goals in the first 18:07 of the match. Lauriann Parker capped a fast break with a goal just 1:42 into the match to put the Seahawks (4-4) up one, followed by an unassisted tally from Natalie Hackstaff. Lynchburg settled down, as it cracked the scoreboard with 9:02 on the clock in the first half on a goal from freshman Lindsay Leonard (Yorktown, VA/Grafton).
Lynchburg controlled the second half, outshooting the Seahawks 12-0 in the stanza while picking up seven penalty corners to SMC's 0. Allie Weir's tying goal in the second half pushed her goal scoring streak to nine, also upping her career total to 115 just five behind the NCAA Division III record of 120. Sophomore Jordan Warrington (Ocean View, DE/Indian River) picked up an assist, and now has 14 points in her last three contests.
Senior Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made two saves for Lynchburg and Samantha Marano (Camden, DE/Caesar Rodney) was credited with a defensive save. St. Mary's keeper Emma Lauhoff made eight saves in net, as she faced 25 Hornet shots on the afternoon. The Hornets also finished with 14 corners to SMC's three.
Lynchburg is right back at it tomorrow, as the Wolverines of Wesley College come to Shellenberger Field for a 1 p.m. non-conference throw down.
