No. 14 Lynchburg Field Hockey Ekes Out Win at Washington & Lee

LC Box Score at Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, VA - The No. 14 Hornet field hockey team needed some late magic Wednesday night, as Lynchburg College netted two goals in the last 3:40 of the game to lift LC to a 3-2 come from behind victory over Washington & Lee University in league play from the W&L Turf Field.

Washington & Lee (1-4/0-1 ODAC) opened the scoring just before halftime, thanks to an Annie Stevenson goal with help from Chelsea Stevenson. After intermission, the Hornets (6-2/2-0 ODAC) knotted the score at one, as Kristina Morris (Stafford, VA/Mountain View) scored her first of the season unassisted.

Kristina Morris scored her first of the season in a 3-2 win over W&L Wednesday.                The host Generals would again take a one score advantage, as Lindsay Edmonds tallied at 49:53 of the contest on another assist from Chelsea Stevenson. Lynchburg would pressure late into the match, getting the equalizer from senior Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) unassisted at the 66:20 mark of the second half.

The Hornets were not done, as Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) capped the comeback by finding the back of the cage off of an assist from newcomer Shelly Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) with two minutes left. The win was the Hornets first come-from-behind victory of the 2009 season, and was also the first since Sept. 27, 2008 when LC erased a one-goal lead by W&L to win that match-up 2-1.

Lynchburg outshot its hosts 18-11, holding a slight 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Senior keeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) had five saves for LC, including three right before the game-tying goal in the second half. Generals netminder Caroline Habliston also made eight saves in the loss, which marked the fifth-straight one goal win by Lynchburg over Washington & Lee, dating back to 2005.

No. 14 LC will entertain St. Mary's (Md.) College on Saturday for Senior Day, as the 2009 seniors will be honored shortly before the scheduled 1 p.m. start on Shellenberger Field.
