Training world-class health care professionals

"There is nothing that compares to the feeling of being able to take a patient from complete dependency on others to being able to function independently in society. When this new program secures the support it needs to conduct relevant research and build innovative facilities, physical therapists trained at Lynchburg College will be -- directly and indirectly -- assisting thousands of patients like this around the world."

- Dr. Kevin Brueilly, founding director of the Lynchburg College Doctor of Physical Therapy program

With health care expected to be one of the largest areas of job growth into the next decade and beyond, Lynchburg College is enhancing existing health sciences offerings and designing new programs to meet the needs of our students and community. We have added a new master's degree in nursing and a competitive Doctor of Physical Therapy program to complement our thriving programs in athletic training, exercise physiology, health and physical education, health promotion, nursing and sport management.

Our vision for the future:

Currently, the only restriction to our dreams is physical space. When renovations are complete, the new 60,000-square-foot Health Sciences Building will rival -- and even surpass -- most health science facilities at major universities. Lynchburg College is also partnering with Centra and Central Virginia Community College to open a nearby Regional Health Science Simulation and Virtual Learning Center. With these new programs and facilities, Lynchburg health sciences graduates will be among the world's best-trained health care professionals.

Why DPT Is Unique:

  • Instructional material integrated across the curriculum
  • Proven instructional methods, grounded in research
  • Student-centered environment
  • Close working relationship with faculty
  • State-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facilities
  • On-site dedicated physical therapy research areas
  • Faculty committed to every student's success
  • Established partnership with regional health care facilities

Anonymous Foundation Challenge for Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program

Lynchburg College has received a challenge grant from an anonymous foundation in support of the new facility for our doctor of physical therapy (DPT) program. The grant, in the amount of $30,000, will provide support specialized laboratory equipment for the program. Gifts and pledges received through December, 2011 will allow the college to claim this one-to-one challenge grant and thus enable us to acquire critical equipment, such as the new motion analysis lab that is needed for this program. Help us to reach our goal!

Plans for Health Science

With health care expected to be one of the largest areas of job growth into the next decade and beyond, Lynchburg College is enhancing existing health sciences offerings and designing new programs to meet the needs of our students and community. We have added a new master's degree in nursing and a competitive doctor of physical therapy program to complement our thriving programs in athletic training, exercise physiology, health and physical education, health promotion, nursing and sports management.

Currently, we are focusing our efforts on raising funds for a Health Sciences Building and equipment for our new physical therapy program and for facilities and equipment for a Central Virginia Regional Health Sciences Simulation and Virtual Learning Center

"Educating our nursing and health science students is incredibly rewarding, because I know these students will be caring for patients in our community and beyond. The new Regional Health Sciences Simulation and Virtual Learning Center will give our students exceptional hands-on experience with life-like simulation mannequins. This is the kind of experience they need to provide the top-quality health care we expect."

Nygaard Challenge for Health Science Simulation Center

Lynchburg College Trustee Ellen Nygaard has pledged $65,000 as a challenge to help fund the development of a new Regional Health Sciences Simulation and Virtual Learning Center to be used by Lynchburg College's School of Health Sciences. The total start-up cost for this project is $662,829, and the Center will be self-supporting after the first year via tuition and fees from students, as well as fees from others who use the Center for training purposes. This educational facility will provide opportunities each year for 85 nursing students, physical therapy doctoral students, and other health careers students to develop health care knowledge and techniques in a state-of-the-art simulation environment. The College must raise a minimum of $130,000 in new gifts and pledges by June 30, 2010 in order to claim this two-to-one challenge gift.
