BOX SCORE

Josh ReedLYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College men's soccer team concluded play in the Shellenberger Memorial Tournament with a 2-1 victory of the Presidents of Washington & Jefferson College. With their 2-0 victory over Randolph College earlier in the day, Mary Washington won the tournament.

LC (4-1) commanded the game from the beginning as they fired off 34 shots to just seven for W&J (2-3) and held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks. Donald Hard III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) put the Hornets on the board at the 19:41 mark as he had pocketed a goal on a breakaway as he went one-on-one with the goalie with a defender draped on his back.

Josh Reed (Newark, DE/Caravel Academy) was awarded a penalty kick just over 60 minutes into the game. However, the ball bounced off the bottom side of the crossbar and was saved by the goalie. Controversy ensued after Reed was able to tap the ball into the net. A minute long discussion assumed amongst the referees to determine if it was a goal, and the referees ruling proved beneficial for the Hornets to give them a 2-0 lead. Josh Weber found the back of the net for the Presidents with less than five minutes remaining to gain momentum, but LC was able to fight off W&J to secure the 2-1 victory.

The goalkeeper tandem of Simen Myrum and Brandon Kern tallied 11 saves for the Presidents.

Lynchburg returns to the field on Wednesday, September 16, as they battle Eastern Mennonite University to open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
