No. 16 Hornets Field Hockey Tops Mary Washington 4-3 in Season Opener

LC Box Score vs. Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Hornet sophomore Jordan Warrington (Ocean View, DE/Indian Head) scored twice as the No. 16 Lynchburg College field hockey team opened its 2009 season with a 4-3 win over the University of Mary Washington Tuesday.

Sophomore Jordan Warrington scored two goals in a season-opening win for LC Tuesday.                Lynchburg opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game, as Warrington scored with help from Allie Weir (Richmond, VA/James River). Senior Erin Funkhouser (Natural Bridge, VA/Menchville) doubled the Hornet's lead with an unassisted tally at the 32:53 mark of the first half, sending the game to intermission with a 2-0 LC advantage.

After break, the Hornets continue to pressure the young Eagles (0-1) as Warrington netted her second of the day with help from Kristina Morris (Stafford, VA/Mountain View). Allie Weir notched her first of the season just under six minutes later on another Morris assist to build Lynchburg's bulge up to four.

The Eagles would not let down though, as Carleigh Bowler scored with 21:41 left, and Emma Jones tallied two goals off of penalty corners to pull the hosts to within one. Lynchburg's defense would stiffen, and any hopes of an equalizer from UMW went for naught.

LC outshot the Eagles 22-18 on the afternoon, but surrendered 15 penalty corners to its total of eight. Senior Sarah Cates (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) made five stops in net for LC, while Chrissy Bowdren made 14 saves for Mary Washington. UMW defenders Nicole Conti and Heidi Sheehan kept the game within reach as each made two defensive saves.

LC (1-0) will come home for its next two games, as the DePauw University Tigers come to town Saturday at 3:30 p.m. for a non-conference tussle on the new turf of Shellenberger Field.
