Men's Soccer Kicks Off the Fall Season for LC with a 3-0 Victory Over Methodist
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Lynchburg College men's soccer team got the Lynchburg College fall sports season rolling in positive fashion with a 3-0 victory over USA South Conference foe Methodist University.
Lynchburg, picked third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Pre-Season Poll, wasted no time notching the first goal of the season as Donald Hart III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) drilled a shot from the penalty kick area into the upper left corner to put LC on top 1-0. However, neither team could muster much offense the rest of the half behind some stout defensive play. LC managed to fire off six more shots while Methodist's only two shot attempts were stuffed by Danny Town (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown), who was making his first collegiate start in the net.
The Hornets scored again 54:43 into the contest as Michael Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) scored from in close off a Hart III pass to push the LC lead out to 2-0. Just 13 seconds later, Abbonizio nearly pocketed his second goal of the contest with his shot hitting off the crossbar. The Hart III to Abbonizio connection struck again shortly under four minutes later as Hart III delivered a pass to the far left post as Abbonizio redirected it into the goal. Lynchburg held Methodist scoreless the rest of the way to secure the 3-0 shutout victory.
LC outshot MU 13-7 and Town recorded five saves for his first collegiate win and shutout.
Lynchburg will make the short trip to Hampden-Sydney, VA, to play in the Hampden-Sydney Tournament from September 5-6. The Hornets play Stevenson University at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Shenandoah University at noon on Sunday.
