About Us Academics Admissions Athletics Giving to the College Graduate Studies Library Student Life
Students have the opportunity to tailor their field of study through independent study (ENGL 670). Independent studies allow students to undertake a directed reading, research problem, or writing endeavor not covered by the M.A. curriculum in conjunction with a faculty expert who publishes in the proposed area of inquiry. Recent independent studies have involved editing and indexing books by faculty members and preparing digital editions of works using primary sources and archival materials.

Internships allow students to work directly in an off-campus context appropriate to the student’s field of study. One student recently worked as an editorial intern for the nationally-acclaimed literary journal Shenandoah. Such opportunities afford students practical experience in their areas of interest.
