Ricky Flynn Takes Home Academic All-American Honors
NEW ORLEANS -- Lynchburg College's Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) recently was named to the 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic squad.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective event. Flynn currently holds a 3.54 cumulative GPA in the major of business management, while minoring in criminology.
Flynn earned four All-American awards throughout the year aside from winning the 1,500-meter run at the ODAC outdoor championships and the one-mile run and 5,000-meter run at the ODAC indoor championships. At the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the junior standout finished fifth in the 5,000-meter event, crossing the line in 14:49.46.
His best performance came earlier in the meet when he placed second in the 10,000-meter run, just three seconds off the lead with a time of 30:57.71. Both marks were good enough for All-American status, adding to the honors he received for his fifth place finish in the NCAA indoor 5,000-meter run and his showing at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
Flynn helped the Hornets to a national ranking as high as fifth this season, and also led LC to its 23rd outdoor track and field title in school history, while helping capture the league's indoor team title as well this year.
