LC Baseball Well Represented On 2009 All-State List
LYNCHBURG, VA - The 2009 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) released its College Division All-State baseball teams Thursday, as the Hornets of Lynchburg College were honored with four players on the squad, including both first-team pitchers.
Senior hurler Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) earned All-State for the second consecutive season, after he finished the 2009 campaign tied for second in the ODAC in wins with a 6-2 overall record. He registered a 3.39 earned run average covering 58.1 innings of work, and kept the ball in play as he surrendered just one homerun all season.
Against ODAC opponents, he went a perfect 4-0 in four starts (five appearances) with a 2.45 ERA. He allowed 35 hits and fanned 15 batters 33.0 innings pitched. He went seven or more innings in each of his starts, and did not surrender a homer to any ODAC batters.
Junior Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs) continued to add to his honors list, as he was named to the All-State first team. Thompson earns this accolade after already finding his name on the All-ODAC second team and All-Region first team.
Thompson posted a 7-2 record on the season, tossing 52.1 innings over 12 games of work. His earned run average of 2.62 was second on the Hornet squad and was also third among starters in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Thompson added complete game shutouts against conference rivals Randolph-Macon College and Virginia Wesleyan College.
Hornets honored on the All-State second team were second baseman Jordan Watkins (Hereford, MD/Freeland) and outfielder Jeff Taylor, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage). Watkins led the Hornets with a .410 batting average, while Taylor, Jr. batted .370 on the season to go with 27 stolen bases in 32 attempts.
The Hornets finished with their second consecutive regular season league title in 2009 and a 25-14 overall record.
