Lynchburg College has been awarded a $126,036 grant from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) to offer area teachers opportunities for specialized training and licensure renewal.
In August, Lynchburg College will host a two-day customized workshop for fourth- and fifth-grade math teachers to focus on integrating literature and language arts with mathematics. The workshops will be presented by the Activities Integrating Math and Science (AIMS) Foundation and will concentrate on word problems (problem solving), fractions, and basic math facts. For teachers seeking additional professional development, EDCI 661 Instructional Strategies for School Math will be offered during the spring 2010 term.
Secondary school teachers can receive specialized training in enhancing literacy instruction through the grant. Beginning this summer and continuing throughout the school year, Lynchburg College will offer coursework in economics, reading, and writing. Courses may be taken for licensure renewal or applied to a graduate program at the College. In addition, a series of reading and writing workshops will be offered in the fall and spring semesters and may be counted toward license renewal points.
The grant will also provide the opportunity for provisionally licensed special education teachers to complete designated coursework for the new Virginia Department of Education special education-adapted curriculum endorsement, which replaced the prior state endorsement in severe disabilities.
Lynchburg College will provide matching funds for the initiatives included in the grant to public and private school teachers in the area.
The grant was awarded as the direct result of the efforts of the Central Virginia Regional Consortium (Amherst County, Appomattox County, Bedford County, Campbell County, Lynchburg City Schools, and Lynchburg College) who designed the multi-dimensional project in response to identified critical needs within the region.
