Six Hornet squads earned Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) titles and several advanced deep into NCAA Division III post-season play during the 2008-09 season. Seven Hornets earned All-American honors, and the Hornets captured the ODAC Men's Commissioner's Cup, given to the best overall program in the league.
Men's cross country, field hockey, and women's soccer nabbed conference titles in the fall, followed by the men's indoor track and field team in the winter and the men's outdoor track and field and softball squads in the spring.
Junior Ricky Flynn had an incredible year, earning All-American honors in cross country and three times in track and field. Women's soccer midfielder Ashley Hoath and field hockey attack Allie Weir each earned third-team All-American honors, and Tyler Tolson was an honorable mention to the men's lacrosse All-American team. Brandon Edwards joined Flynn on the All-American platform in the indoor track and field season. The equestrian team had an individual with the best finish in program history, as freshman Kelly Gerland was the reserve champion in intermediate fences at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship.
In addition to post-season success, several Lynchburg College teams had memorable records. The women's soccer team went 21-1-3, including a 9-0-2 mark in conference play. Field hockey posted an 18-6 record, and men's soccer finished 14-2-4. The softball team set a program record at 38-8-1, while baseball and men's lacrosse finished 25-14 and 11-5, respectively.
Academically, the Hornets also received numerous accolades. Softball senior Brittany Allsop earned ESPN The Magazine second-team Academic All-American honors and was the conference's scholar-athlete of the year. The field hockey team had 12 individuals earn a spot on the Academic Squad, and Flynn and Ashley Meyer grabbed spots on the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Academic All-American list. Allsop and Tolson were named the school's top female and male senior athletes at the athletic department's season-ending banquet in early May.
"I am extremely proud of our entire athletic department and the efforts of all of our coaches and student-athletes this year," said director of athletics Dr. Jack Toms '69. "The numbers of conference titles, All-ODAC honorees, and All-Americans speak for themselves. But even more importantly, our numerous awards in the academic arena show what a true Division III program strives for."
