May 22, 2009
SALEM, Va. --- Washington and Lee University captured its sixth straight Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance ®. The Generals, who were crowned champions in six sports during the 2008-09 athletic season, also claimed the Women's Commissioner's Cup for the sixth successive time. On the men's side, Lynchburg College took home the Men's Commissioner Cup.
Farm Bureau Insurance is the proud sponsor for the Dan Wooldridge Overall Champions Cup and the Men and Women's Commissioner's Cups. Farm Bureau and the ODAC continue their partnership in focusing on the strength of the conference's student-athletes and maintaining the NCAA Division III philosophy of the complete student-athlete experience. Aside from supporting the ODAC Commissioners' Cups, Farm Bureau is the sponsor of the ODAC's sport-by-sport scholar-athlete awards.
The ODAC Board of Directors voted last spring to change the way in which the Commissioner's Cup winners are determined. Points for the Commissioner's Cups are based on regular season standings in team sports and championship team finishes in individual sports. Each institution has a total number of possible points they can collect based on their individual sport sponsorship. The total number of points earned is then divided by the total number of possible points in order to come up with a ranking for each institution.
Washington & Lee won its thirteenth overall sport trophy and its ninth women's sport trophy since the award's inception in 1994-95. This year, the Generals racked up 139.5 points out of a total 183.0 possible points for an overall rating of 0.76. Washington and Lee claimed conference championship titles in golf, women's cross country, swimming, women's tennis, women's indoor track & field and volleyball. The Generals also finished atop the league in the men's tennis regular season standings.
Lynchburg College won the men's sport trophy by capturing 56.0 points out of a possible 79.0 points for an overall rating of 0.71. The Hornets were crowned conference champions in cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field. Lynchburg was also a regular season champion in baseball.
Roanoke College finished second in the overall sport standings earning 122.5 points out of a 172.0 points possible for an overall rating of 0.71 after claiming conference championship titles in women's lacrosse and women's outdoor track & field. The Maroons also were named regular season champions in men's lacrosse, men's soccer and women's basketball. Randolph-Macon rounded out the top three spots for the overall sport trophy standings by acquiring 96.0 of their possible 144.0 points for an overall rating of 0.67.
