
2009 Lynchburg College Women's Lacrosse Season Review
The Lynchburg College women's lacrosse team returned to its accustomed winning ways in the 2009 season, posting a 9-8 record. LC scored impressive non-conference wins over Marymount, Frostburg State, Greensboro, Methodist and Shenandoah and picked up Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victories against Guilford, Sweet Briar, Bridgewater and Hollins - - and nearly defeated perennial conference powerhouse Washington & Lee University.
Six Hornets were named to the 2009 All-ODAC Team at the conclusion of the campaign. Three players earned second-team accolades: attack Deanna Welsch midfielder Morgan Logue and defender Katie Reynolds. Welsch led the Hornets with 41 goals and 51 points, and added 23 ground balls and 25 draw controls. She was also named to the second-team All-ODAC team last spring.
Logue, a sophomore, was second with 35 goals, including two game winners, and 49 points. She added 38 ground balls and 34 draw controls. Reynolds, a junior, started 14 out of 16 games, added 40 ground balls and caused 25 turnovers.
Three Hornets received honorable mentions: attack Katie Ollice, midfielder Lindsay Gengras (pictured left) and defender Amanda Werth. Ollice, a junior, netted 33 goals, including a game winner. She was third with 40 points and added 16 ground balls. Gengras, a sophomore, had 20 goals, including two game winners, and 11 assists. She also added 53 ground balls and 32 draw controls. Werth tallied 23 ground balls and caused 11 turnovers in her senior season. She started all 17 games for the Hornets.
Sophomore Patty Sheahan (right) had an outstanding season in the midfield, notching 24 goals (fourth on the team) with six assists. She led the squad with 35 draw controls, and ranked high in ground balls (34), and caused turnovers (19). Megan Murphy finished a stellar LC career by starting every game on defense. Freshmen Christina Tran and Kaelyn Sullivan split time in net, combining for 163 saves and a 9,98 goals against average. Tran also paced the team with 56 ground balls, while Sullivan scooped 20.
Sophomore midfielder Emily McMillan battled injury and missed six contests, but was efficient in her 11 games with 12 goals and 16 ground balls. Fellow sophomore Kelsey Johnson earned 11 starts in the midfield, and responded with two goals and 11 groundballs. Another sophomore, Kit Russell, tallied eight goals and six assists in 15 games.
Senior attackers Tricia Clay and Elizabeth Jackson combined for 11 starts, 11 goals and six assists. Junior Elizabeth Moulden started six times and found the back of the net five times an added six helpers in 13 games. Freshman Lesley Buckingham made the most of her playing time in 14 games, scoring seven goals with eight assists. Rookies Berry Morse (8 G, 2 A), Katie Tinsley (2 G, 1A), Lexi Cuneo (1 G, 2 A) and Leah Heal (1 G, 1 A, 5 starts) showed the potential to step in future seasons.
Senior Ashley Stern and freshman Meredith Buskard each played eight games on defense, while junior Aven Gentry and freshman Carrie Gorden each competed in six games and freshman defender Kat Miller played in three.
