Lynchburg Men's Track and Field to Be Well Represented at NCAA Championships
LYNCHBURG, VA - Head mentor Dr. Jack Toms and the Lynchburg College men's track and field team, winners of its 23rd Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship earlier this season, has qualified a total of seven competitors for five events in the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held in Marietta, OH on May 21-23.
Newcomer James Bell (Huddleston, VA/Staunton River) qualified for his second track national meet in the pole vault, as his 4.82 meter jump at the Gregory Invitational put him in the field. Senior Brandon Edwards (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) matched his indoor output with another trip to Nationals in the triple jump, as his bound of 14.77 meters is currently seventh in the nation.
Distance star Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) earned a spot in two events, as Flynn will compete at Nationals in the two longest events, the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs. Flynn has the eighth-fastest time in the country in the 5,000 meter at 14:27.58 and third-best booking in the 10,000 at 30:09.63.
The LC Track squad will also send a relay team to the national meet, as Rashard Adams (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge), Evan Ellison (Atlanta, GA/McCallie), Edwards and Earl Graves (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) will combine to compete in the 4x400 meter relay, as their time of 3:15.24 at the Chick-Fil-A UNC Elite Meet was good enough to dance.
The Championship meet starts on May 21 and concludes on May 23, and is being held on the campus of Marietta College. Lynchburg is currently ranked 17th in the nation among all Division III schools.
