Bridgewater Ends LC Softball Season With 4-2 Victory

SALISBURY, MD - The Bridgewater College softball team defeated Lynchburg College 4-2 to end the season for the Hornets.

Bridgewater got off to a strong start from the beginning. Ashley Gills recorded two ground outs and one strike out while hitting one batter to keep the Hornets in check. After the Eagles leadoff hitter struck out, the next three batters rached based safely to load the bases, but 1-2-3 double play allowed LC to get out of the first inning unscathed.

The second inning proved to be a different story. BC recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second. The BC leadoff hitter doubled and the Hornets got the next two batters out, but a Leah Cossentino single scored Lauren Childress from second base. Hillary Rees came up to the plate and delivered a two-run gomerun to left field to give Bridgewater a 3-0 lead. The Eagles struck again in the fourth inning, scoring one run as Emily Morris doubled down the left field line to drive in Rees.

Gills stifled the Hornets through five innings as she allowed just three on base - two hits and one hit by pitch. The Hornets came alive in the sixth inning, however. Lauren Duguay (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) reached on a fielding error and Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) followed up with a single to put runners on first and second. Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary's Academy Bay View) recorded a bunt single to score Duguay and Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) grounded into a double play, but Allsop was able to score from third base.

Gills rebounded from a rocky sixth inning and sealed the deal in the seventh with her third 1-2-3 inning of the game. Allsop was the lone Hornet with a multi-hit performance as she went 2-for-3 with one run. Rees led the Eagles, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, Morris recorded two hits and one RBI, and Cossentino posted a run batted in. Gills had a strong performance in the circle, throwing the complete game while allowing just four hits and zero walks while striking out four batters.

Lynchburg (38-8-1) concludes its season with the second most wins in team history with 38.
