The Omicron Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha was just named Undergraduate Chapter of the Year in the Mid-Atlantic Region, while the Virginia Theta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta was named the Chapter of the Year at Lynchburg College for the first time.
AKA member Sheena Posey '09 was named Undergraduate of the Year for the region. Posey also presented her senior psychology research project at the regional conference's undergraduate luncheon attended by 42 undergraduate chapters from Virginia and North Carolina.
The Omicron Sigma Chapter received a certificate for registering more than 200 people to vote, and received a certificate for 100 percent participation in the sorority's Educational Advancement Foundation. Only five undergraduate chapters received these awards. Additionally, Ashley Payne '10 received the region's creative writing award.
"The members of this Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter are dedicated students and creative members of the Lynchburg College community," said John Eccles, vice president and dean of student development. "Their enthusiasm is contagious. They have been engaged in this community for many years and demonstrate what is best about Greek Life."
Virginia Theta received several awards from LC including: Outstanding New Member of Greek Life, Daniel Toney '10; Outstanding New Member Education Program, Justin Klein '10 and Rob Schultze '11; Five of the Top Ten Scholars in fraternities were Leland Hertig '10, Matt Wargo '11, Joe Sancio '10, Greg Young '10, and Frankie Longaker '09.
"Phi Delta Theta has become the standard for the rest of Greek Life on this campus," Eccles said. "The brothers are continuing to push the bar higher and it is no surprise that they are the top chapter at Lynchburg College.'"
