As you are probably aware the swine flu epidemic is getting a great deal of attention in the world today. We have been in conversation with other colleges and universities in the Commonwealth, as well as representatives from the Virginia Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control. We have also convened the College's Crisis Management Team to review the current health situation nationally and internationally, review our protocols, and review possible scenarios for our community. While the current health situation is of great concern we feel that it is also important to provide resources to the Lynchburg College Community so that you can be informed and up to date. Here is what we know from the VHD and the CDC and what we are also currently doing:
• This particular strain is currently acting more like seasonal flu and certainly is not generating high mortality rates. While it is spreading across the country at a high rate, only one flu death as of April 29 has been reported. This mortality rate is far below even the common seasonal flu we all suffer through each year. Thus we will act the same way we normally do during the flu season. At this point there are no plans to cancel events, recess classes and exams, or postpone trips.
• We encourage our community to wash hands often and engage in good sneeze etiquette. If someone has flu-like symptoms they should go directly to the Health Center or their local health care provider. If sick, they should stay away from others.
• We will monitor the flu epidemic and make modifications for summer staffing in the Health Center and clinic if needed.
• We will closely monitor our Study Abroad programs and how they might be impacted by CDC travel advisories. We have contacted all LC Study Abroad program leaders and asked them to review hygiene etiquette in light of their pending travels.
To conclude: this flu, while widespread, is manifesting itself more as a seasonal flu. The news outlets are certainly giving it a run for their money but we need to remain focused on the facts. The CDC and Pandemic flu websites are your best places for accurate information and measured recommendations. Below please find the links to the websites that we have found to be particularly helpful.
We will also add a direct CDC link on the LC homepage to keep you current on a daily basis and will provide additional e-mail updates as necessary.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. The best of success on your exams and final projects. Congratulations to our graduating class of 2009!
Sincerely,
John G. Eccles
