Hornet Women’s Track Places Third at ODAC Outdoor Championships

            LEXINGTON, VA – The Lynchburg College women’s track and field team placed third in the six-team field Friday and Saturday at the 2009 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Washington & Lee University. Roanoke College won the team title with 173.5 points, W&L came in second with 139, while LC scored 127. Elizabeth Webb (W&L) and JaLeesa Osborne (Roanoke) shared Athlete of the Meet honors, and Maroon head mentor Finn Pincus was voted the Women’s Coach of the Year.

            The Hornets received an outstanding performance from sophomore thrower Ashley Allen (Richmond, VA/Hermitage). She won the hammer throw with a heave of 142’07”l, took second in the shot put (37’03.75”) and was fourth in the discus (108’08”).

            Sophomore Jennie Pernisi (Camden, NY/APW) took third place for the Hornets in three different events, and junior Ashley Meyer (Springfield, MO/Glendale) earned points in three events. Pernisi finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 12:06.98, and ran times of 4:50.89 and 19:48.34 in the 1,500 and 5,000, respectively. Meyer took second in the 1,500 meters in 4:49.34, was third in the 800 in 2:23.88 and fourth in the 5,000 in 19:52.65.   

            Jessica Gibbs (Lancaster, PA/Penn Manor) leaped 18’00.25” in the long jump to take second, Olivia Johnston (Cranbury, NJ/Princeton) placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.67 while Jill Dziewicz (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) cleared 9’11.75” in the pole vault to also earn second-place honors. Christina Washington (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) was third in the 400-meter dash (58.80) and Krystle Landes (Staunton, VA/Wilson) finished third in the javelin (105’01”).

            LC is scheduled to send select athletes to the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA this Thursday through Saturday.
