BRIDGEWATER, VA - The Lynchburg College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader with the Bridgewater Eagles Saturday, falling in game one 5-0 before taking the nightcap 4-3 in 10 innings. Lynchburg also clinched its second consecutive regular season league title, and will be the tournament's No. 1 seed Thursday.
Lynchburg's opponent for Thursday opening round game of the ODAC Tournament has yet to be determined, and likely will not be decided until late Sunday night. The Hornets do know that they will play at 11 a.m. against the No. 6 seed at Lynchburg's City Stadium.
In game one, Lynchburg (25-12/14-4 ODAC) could not get the bats going as BC starter Casey Hartman tossed a complete-game, five hit shutout in the 5-0 win. Bridgewater got all the runs it would need with three-run homer by Andy Chrismer in the third inning. Junior Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) collected two hits, while Matt Painter (Danville, VA/Dan River) was one-for-three with a double.
In the nightcap, Lynchburg rallied from a two-run deficit in the eighth inning to tie it, eventually taking the lead in the 10th inning on a RBI single from Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Heresford).
In the bottom half of the 10th, Ryan McDonough (Centereach, NY/Our Savior) nailed down his second save of the season but not without some drama. After a strikeout and brilliant backhanded stab and throw from foul territory by Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell) to record the second out, McDonough allowed two hits and a walk to load the bases. McDonough bared down and got Chrismer to ground out to end the game, stranding three on.
Senior starter Joe Devlin (Ashburn, VA/Broad Run) got the win, going nine innings while allowing three earned runs and seven hits. Bradley and Painter finished with two hits and Taylor doubled while scoring three of LC's four runs.
Brad Buracker led BC with three hits in game two, while Aaron Read and Michael Lenox each had a pair of knocks in the nightcap for the Eagles. Read, Chrismer, Buracker and Drew Elkins all had two hits in game one for Bridgewater (21-15/11-7 ODAC).
Lynchburg will partake in the ODAC Baseball Tournament starting Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Lynchburg City Stadium.
