LC Earns the #1 Overall Seed in the ODAC Tournament

BRIDGEWATER, VA - The #13 ranked Lynchburg College softball team recorded a 0-3, 5-0 split with Bridgewater College on Friday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.  The split gives LC the #1 overall seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.

Bridgewater's Ashley Gillis quieted the Hornet batters in the first game to earn a complete-game, one-hit, shutout victory, and LC did not register a hit until the seventh inning.  LC was down just 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles were able to tack on two runs to build an insurmountable 3-0 lead going into the final inning.  Meagan Fredenberg (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) pinch hit to lead off the seventh and tallied LC's only hit of the game and a walk gave the Hornets two batters on base, but Gillis was able to get out of the jam to secure the victory.

In the second game, the pitching excellence took a 180-degree turn as Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) threw a pitching gem to propel LC back on the winning side and earn the Hornets the #1 overall seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.  Katie Bruce was wheeling and dealing in the circle from the very beginning as she struck out the side in the bottom of the first.  The Lynchburg bats came alive in the third inning as they struck first with two runs after the Eagles committed two costly errors.  LC tacked on another run in the fourth inning to take a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Lynchburg cemented the victory in the seventh inning.  Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) led off the inning with an outfield single and Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) executed an infield bunt single to send Allsop to third base.  Bruce contributed to her own cause, hitting a sacrifice fly to center field to bring Allsop across the plate.  Rachel Gallagher (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) reached second base on an outfield double that drove in pinch runner Kelly Self (Christiansburg, VA/Christiansburg) to push the lead to 5-0.

Bridgewater got batters on second and third base in the bottom of the seventh with only one out recorded, but Bruce threw two straight strikeouts to close out the game.  Bruce finished game two with a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed just five hits.  Allsop was 2-4 with one run and Lauren Duguay (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Lynchburg (31-6-1/16-2) concludes the regular season with a doubleheader on Wednesday against Shenandoah University at 3 p.m.
