LC Men's Track & Field Hosts LC Classic
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College men's outdoor track and field squad hosted the Lynchburg College Classic Saturday, as 15 teams invaded Shellenberger Field for the festivities.
Lynchburg used the meet as a warm-up for next week's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship meet, hosted by Washington & Lee University. "We saw a lot of good things today," said LC head coach Dr. Jack Toms. Toms also noted "Today was a tune-up for next week's (ODAC Championships) meet, and the coaching staff was very encouraged."
Some of those notable performers included Chris Word (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass), who finished sixth in the 100 meter dash, running a time of 11.35. Word and Evan Ellison (Atlanta, GA/McCallie) were fifth and sixth in the 200 meters, while Sam Steinke (The Woodlands, TX/American School of Dubai) posted a fourth place finish in the 400, finishing with a time of 49.90.
Distance star Ricky Flynn (Gaithersburg, MD/Damascus) took home first place in the 1500 meters, running a 3:58.70, while Ryan Van Alstine (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) was fifth in with a time of 4:05.26.
Freshman James Bell (Huddleston, VA/Staunton River) provisionally qualified for the national meet in the pole vault, clearing a distance of 15 feet, five inches. Fellow vaulter Tommy Clark (Alexandria, VA/TC Williams) cracked LC's top five list with a pole vault of 15 feet even. John Michael Pavia (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) broke a two-year old school record in the hammer throw, finishing with a distance 157 feet, four inches.
Lynchburg will compete in the ODAC Championships this upcoming Friday and Saturday in Lexington, VA on the campus of Washington & Lee University.
