22nd Ranked Softball Sweeps Emory 2-1, 5-0

LYNCHBURG, VA - The 22nd ranked Lynchburg College softball team swept visiting Emory University 2-1 and 5-0 in non-conference action from Aubrey R. Moon, Jr. Field.

The first game proved to be a pitchers' duel.  LC in the bottom of the first inning as two singles and a wild pitch put Brittany Allsop (Milford, CT/Johnathan Law) and Audra Della Rosa (Rumford, RI/St. Mary Academy Bay View) on second and third base with no outs. Katie Bruce (Lanexa, VA/Lafayette) then reached base on a fielder's choice that sent Allsop across home plate to give the Hornets a 1-0 edge.  Bruce delivered again in the third inning with a solo homer to deep center field. In the top of the sixth, Jessica Thomas of Emory (28-8) hit a single to drive in Zara Louy, but Allsop was able to throw out Kelsey Floyd at home plate to preserve a 2-1 lead for Lynchburg.  Barbie Miles (Kinsale, VA/Washington & Lee) earned the win in the circle, throwing another complete game while allowing seven hits and three walks.  Shanon Andersen led the way for the Eagles, pitching six innings, striking out 12 Hornets, and allowing just four hits.

LC only managed to earn three hits in the second game, but the Hornets exploded for five runs in the third inning. Bruce came up to bat with the bases loaded and reached on a fielder's choice to drive in one run. Tara Campbell (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun Co.) followed up with another FC that drove in one run, but a throwing error allowed another runner to cross the plate to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Rachel Gallagher (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) then stepped up to the plate and delivered a double to left center that plated Campbell and Bruce. Bruce pitched all seven innings, giving up seven hits and walking zero Eagles.

Lynchburg (26-5) returns to the field on Tuesday for a home non-conference double-header against Greensboro College at 3 p.m.
