VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The Lynchburg College baseball team won the opener of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader 4-0, but fell in the second game 8-4 in earning a doubleheader split with the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday from Marlins Field.
In game one, LC (19-10/9-2 ODAC) was led by the fantastic pitching performance from left hander Conner Thompson (Solomons, MD/Reservoirs). Thompson went the distance, allowing only three hits and walking none. Thompson also forced the Marlins into four 1-2-3 innings in the seven inning ball game.
Lynchburg scored one run in the first inning on an unearned run, and followed that with a two-run second frame, highlighted by a RBI single from senior Kyle Bradley (Brookneal, VA/William Campbell). LC tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Taylor (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage).
In the nightcap, Lynchburg scored three first inning runs as Taylor and Ryan Litz (Forest,VA/Jefferson Forest) each had RBI singles for the Hornets. VWC responded with four runs in the bottom of the third, and after the two teams exchanged runs in the fifth inning, the Marlins put themselves up for good with a three-spot in the sixth frame.
Game two proved to be a sloppy game for LC, who committed six errors and allowed four unearned runs, which proved to be the difference. Sophomore Jordan Watkins (Freeland, MD/Heresford) was two-for-four with a RBI in game two, while David Gaines, Jr. (Lynchburg, VA/Jefferson Forest) finished two-for-three.
Junior Cameron Grant (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) had two hits in the opener and was also hit by two pitches today, upping his season total to 14 which is a new Lynchburg school record. Myles Shipp, Phil Cadle and C.J. Rhodes paced the Marlins with two hits apiece in the nightcap.
Lynchburg returns home Tuesday afternoon for another conference battle with the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney College at 3 p.m.
